Winter is over, spring is in full swing, and sunnier summer days are coming soon.  It’s the perfect time to get your home ready for a new season. Below you will find a few ways to declutter your home and be inspired to get ready for warm days.

Area #1: The Kitchen

We suggest you start by decluttering your refrigerator and pantry. These places are likely have a lot of items or products that can be tossed. Like a medicine cabinet in your bathroom, the pantry is often home for clutter. Start by checking the staleness and expiration dates on all your food, canned goods, and spices. If you haven’t used the product in a long time and don’t foresee needing it, but it’s still fresh, consider donating it to your local church or food pantry. Quite a few people can benefit from the things you no longer need.

Area #2: The Bathroom

Since we mentioned medicine cabinets above, let’s move right into the bathroom. If you want or need more space in your bathroom (and let’s face it who doesn’t in New York City?), you won’t believe how many items you have that you never use. If your medicine cabinet or linen closet is spilling over with medicine, hair and beauty products, start by removing anything you haven’t used in six months or more.

Remove any medicine boxes or pill bottles and dispose of  expired medicine. To find out the safest way to dispose of medicine, check out the Food and Drug Administration’s website. After clearing out all your expired medicine and beauty products, put the items you want to keep back in your medicine cabinet or linen closet in an organized fashion. Small clear containers can come in handy for sorting and storing.

You can also put things back to their original home where they belong such as your flat iron or makeup. Though it sounds so simple, most people tend to leave the tools that they use daily out for easy access.

Area #3: The Bedroom

Declutter all the surfaces in your bedroom. If you have things on top of your furniture, get rid of them with the same tips as above. If you haven’t used them in six months or more, they should be removed or trashed.  The word we can use for decluttering your bedroom would be purge.  Purging simply means getting rid of or storing things that haven’t been used in a long time.

If you don’t declutter or purge on a yearly basis, your closet should be the first place to start. This task might seem daunting, but in reality it’s the easiest. This is because you already know what you love to wear and what you wear often. We suggest buying extra hangers and start by sorting your clothes into categories.  For example you work attire, dresses, and casual clothing. Clothing that’s too small or too large can be donated to your local church or Goodwill.
