BASEMENTS - FUNCTIONAL DESIGN
|

The basement is usually the darkest and dreariest room of
the house, so use vibrant and bright colors to liven the place up.
Paint the walls a dramatic and vivid color and choose furnishings
that add brightness. And since most basements have little to no natural
light, use artificial lighting to your advantage: indirect, up- and
recessed lighting in conjunction with table and floor lamps are flexible
and creative ways to illuminate this traditionally dark space. Mirrors
can also reinforce installed lighting and add the illusion of space.
Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting—which can quickly become a moisture
trap—and instead choose area rugs (which can be removed, cleaned
and dried) to add splashes of color and texture. Also avoid drapes
and curtains as they can also absorb moisture, increasing the risk
of dangerous mold and mildew growing rampant. Instead, choose blinds
and shutters in various hues to complement your design.
Finally,
be careful to store clothing, books and other items in airtight containers
in your basement to prevent them from getting moldy and
developing a musty odor.
As always, MyHome can provide one or all of these services for you
or completely renovate your space in any way you’d like. |
