WHAT
IS FENG SHUI? |
Defined as “wind-water,” Feng Shui design is an
ancient practice meant to improve the interaction between a person
and their living space to ensure the positive flow of energy.
Based on wise observations of the ebb and flow of natural forces,
Feng Shui assumes a person’s physical and spatial relationship
with the world can affect their attitude, their health, and their
prosperity. It also assumes that people, spaces and objects all
have inherent energies; when the flow of these energies is negatively
affected or even blocked, illness, unhappiness and misfortune
occur.
Today Feng Shui practice is hinged on altering environments to
ensure good qi flow or “energy flow”. This means choosing
purifying elements, clearing stagnant areas, or selecting energizing
colors or materials.
Some modern feng shui techniques have origins in Neolithic China,
and others came later from cultures like the Han dynasty, the Tang,
and the Ming. However, understanding the energy flow and its correct
use in the house, the office, a particular room or any structure
is a difficult task that takes practice and concentration.

art in depth and are wholly committed to implementing this complex

Feng Shui 101
The energy flow in your home is determined by the way the five
elements--Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water—interact to
create both productive and destructive energies. This highly complex
pattern is called your home’s energy map. This energy map
can be manipulated through various means in various patterns. Some
include:
Fresh air
The best way to ensure fresh air in an urban environment like New
York, New Jersey or Connecticut is to use purifying plans like
bamboo, rubber plants, English ivy, Ficus or Boston fern. Such
plants filter out toxins and add invigorating oxygen to your space.
An abundance of natural light
Natural light, in combination with adequate “warm” artificial
lighting—that means no cold florescent bulbs!—are a
must for the feng shui home.
A clutter-free space
In the world of feng shui, clutter represents stagnant energy in
the home. Such clutter can block the flow of energy in your home
as well as the flow of energy in your life. The most essential
areas to keep clutter-free include: the bedroom; the kitchen; the
main entry-way.
Color
Certain colors correspond to each of the five elements and should
be used at different points in your home in relation to the cardinal
directions as well as the home’s layout, doors, and windows.
White or gray: METAL
Blue or black: WATER
Green or brown: WOOD
Red, Strong Yellow, Orange, Purple: FIRE
Light Yellow: EARTH
