What is Solarthermal?
While PV provides many energy solutions, solarthermal or Solar
Domestic Hot Water (SDHW) systems might further increase your financial
savings on water heating by 50-75%. What makes solarthermal solutions
viable is their flexibility: For instance, they require little
space on the roof, remain cost efficient to purchase, and they
are less affected by shading.
Solarthermal systems take the sun’s energy much like PV systems
do to generate year-round hot water even in harsh northern climates.
For example, an adequate solarthermal system in NY, CT, or NJ can
supply 60 to 75% of your hot water year round.
It works by using flat plate solar collectors filled with a nontoxic
antifreeze substance called propylene glycol. These collectors
connect to an inside heat exchanger that fills the solar storage
tank with heat during the day when the sun’s at its peak.
There are also tax credits available for using solarthermal power
on both the state and federal level.
NY homeowners may save:
25% off state taxes with a maximum of $5000 worth of savings!
30% off federal taxes with a maximum of $2000 worth of savings!
Connecticut homeowners may save:
30% off federal taxes with a maximum of $2000 worth of savings.
Federal tax credits even offer up to 55% of the costs of a system!
