Energy Efficient Lighting In New York City |
Today’s environmentally savvy homeowners are already in the
know about the enormous savings energy efficient light bulbs offer
over traditional incandescent bulbs, but a new provision in the
current energy bill may is set to push those resistant to green
technology to adopt the newer lighting as well.
The energy bill, which the Senate passed and the House has just
passed recently, calls for all light bulbs to use 25% to 30% less
energy than today's incandescent bulbs by 2012 to 2014. This process
will start with 100-watt bulbs in January 2012 and terminate with
40-watt bulbs in January 2014. And all bulbs must be 70% more efficient
by 2020.
It is true that incandescent bulbs are the cheapest bulbs to buy
right now and many consumers are attracted to the low up-front
cost: each costs about 50 cents, while a compact fluorescent bulb
(which already meets the 70% efficiency standard) costs about $2.
But since incandescents only last about seven months and a florescent
last six times that and use less electricity, you’ll save
money in the long term. In fact, florescent bulbs end up paying
for themselves in as few as four months of use. This bodes well
for green consumers who are looking to make a difference in the
climate crisis with efficient and sound minded business strategies.
In fact, going green with energy efficiency offers a wide range
of energy solutions for activists a sound business people alike.
For example, by some estimates these new rules may save consumers
about $40 billion in energy and related costs from 2012 to 2030
and cut global-warming emissions by at least 51 million tons of
carbon annually.
And that’s not just good news for you and your utility bills,
that’s good news for the planet, which is why green builders
encourage both residential and commercial property owners to include
florescent bulbs in their renovation and design plans. (In a bold
move, 2007’s Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center was lit
with LED lights, paving the way for green and energy conscious
business owners and homeowners to adopt similar practices.)
