Selecting
the correct molding to fit your space and installing it properly
is one of the most essential finishing touches. There are many different
types of molding. The most common types are a) base molding, which
is installed between the floor and walls and b) crown molding, which
is installed between the walls and ceiling. The more traditional
your space is, the more detailed your molding should be. Some “sophisticated” pre-war
or Victorian style moldings are composed of up to 5 and even 8 different
moldings that are put together like a puzzle.
In pre-war homes, the molding is typically covered in many layers
of paint. Stripping the old molding down to the bare wood is time
consuming and costly. It’s usually more effective to completely
replace it with new molding.
Installing molding requires a skilled carpenter because it’s
very difficult and sometimes impossible (especially in older spaces)
to create nearly invisible seams. The seam is where one piece of
molding connects with the next. Often in crown molding installations,
the ceiling and walls are not level so making the seams meet is extremely
challenging.
