There is always a half inch or more gap between the floor and the wall. This gap is intentionally left for expansion. The base board molding is a decorative solution in order to cover the gap. You will need to select the type of molding that you desire according to your taste and budget. If you would like to run cable or phone wiring it is a great opportunity to do so when the molding is not yet installed.
