KITCHEN DESIGN SERVICES - COUNTERTOPS

Countertops add pizzazz to your kitchen. Since they can get a lot of wear and tear, it's important to choose one that suits both your taste and your lifestyle.

Granite Countertops
A beautiful and popular choice, granite is the best option if you prefer a natural stone countertop. Granite must be sealed every few years with a special liquid sealant. Although it is porous, it's not as porous as other natural stones.
Solid Surface (Corian) Countertops
This is a completely manmade product. It is not porous and does not require any maintenance. Solid surface is the type of material and Corian is a brand name. There are many different brands available with a large variety of colors. The big advantage of solid surface is that it can be repaired if it scratches or burns. Corian became extremely popular in the 1990's.
Quartz (Silestone) Countertops
Relatively new to the American market, this manmade product is 93% natural quartz and 7% resin. Because it is completely non-porous, extremely durable and available in a variety of colors, it is a great option. Silestone is a brand name but several other brands are available.
Butcher Block Countertops
This is a thick countertop made of several layers of wood compressed together. It's most commonly made of birch or maple but also is available in a variety of exotic woods such as walnut, mahogany and ebony. As a design detail, butcher block may be used in one specific area while the rest of the kitchen's countertops are made of different material. Butcher block's The main disadvantage is that it is very porous and can stain easily.
Stainless Steel Countertops
Stainless steel is a great look for an industrial or ultra modern kitchen. It's high-tech and low maintenance but the disadvantage is that it scratches.
Laminate (Formica) Countertops
New finishes and edges have made laminate countertops much more attractive than in years past . Comprised of a plywood base covered with a high- pressured laminate, it is less expensive than other materials. The combination of competitive pricing and a relatively short lead-time for ordering and delivery make laminate a popular option.
Concrete Countertops
This is the biggest countertop trend in recent years. It is a great option for clean, industrial and contemporary designs. Concrete countertops are available in several colors , but the most popular is a natural gray tone. The top layer can be finished if desired. Concrete countertops can be pricey , but the biggest disadvantage is that the countertop will crack if the concrete contracts.
