The most common and cheapest option, asphalt is a lightweight
material that weighs between 200 and 350 pounds. The price ranges
from $20 to $200 a square. As you can see there is also a wide
variety of options even in these parameters. The standard unit
that covers most American homes is the three-tab asphalt shingle
but there are others; all options come in many different colors
and last for up to 30 years amounting to an excellent value. The
only real disadvantage of this option might be attributed to its
frequent use; in other words, if you’re looking to stand
out, this option might not be for you. There are also composition
shingles made from fiberglass or paper, filled with asphalt, and
often covered in granules usually made of stone. Architectural
shingles are a step above standard asphalt and give roofs a more
substantial or sophisticated look. These are heavier, almost twice
as thick as regular asphalt, and somewhat more expensive. In some
colors they can be made to look like slate and other can be made
to look like wood shakes, which makes for many stylistic options.
