If you are considering a flat roof it is important to realize
that drainage may be an issue. Membranes allow you to essentially
“shrink wrap” your roof for extra protection.
Thermoset (EPDM synthetic rubber):
These synthetic rubber strips are chemically welded with solvent
or tape. This work relies heavily on the workpeople involved in
the project. Detail management is a critical aspect of this product.
Thermoplastic Plastic (PVC):
These plastic strips are melted together with hot air and also
require a great deal of skill to put together.
Copolymer (TPO):
Formed of polypropylene and ethylene propylene rubber, this product
incorporates the best features of EPDM and PVC.
Modified Bitumen:
This asphalt embedded material is a fiber mat. Its seams are sealed
sealed with a hot torch or by “hot mopping”. While
considered a “fool proof” option by professionals,
this material does require a modicum of skill to use.
Four Ply:
Either in the form of asphalt impregnated paper or fiberglass
reinforced synthetic mats this membrane is laid out laid out in
strips that are melted on with hot asphalt. Once this process
has been completed the material is covered with a layer of pea
gravel. Good for most flat roofs, this is a simple option that
requires some training to use.
Spray-on Foam:
This isocyanurate foam or elastic rubber topcoat allows you to
spray the material directly on the roof.
