Attractive and timeless, the wood shingle roof is a classic design
that weathers nicely, changing to a silvery color that connects
your home to the your landscaping. Eastern White, Western Red,
and Alaskan Yellow Cedar are the primary sources of materials
and are cut smoothly. Wood shakes, however, are thicker, coarser,
and are split from logs rather than cut. Cedar Shingles are the
high end of the market and have a gorgeous look; they also require
a bit more maintenance and in some climates need to be retreated
with specialized cedar products every five or so years.
Wood roofs need space for aeration and need to be laid on something
like skip sheathing (wood strips attached to the rafters) to allow
for maximum circulation. Without circulation the wood may deteriorate
sooner than desired. Recently manufacturers began producing plastic
options to aid in this process but you can also use pressure-treated
latticework for this purpose.
Wood shingles and shakes are expensive and require some maintenance
like washing for mildew or moss and refinishing the wood treatment.
There are options like pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine that
are reputed to be maintenance-free while still retaining the classic
look of wood.
Wood roofs require great skill to install and at MyHome we have
refined this process to keep your roof safe and looking great
for up to 30 to 50 years. Stainless steel nails help prolong your
roof as they don’t rust like other metals.
Synthetic Wood Shingles offer the best of both worlds, allowing
for the look of wood with the fireproof safety and no maintenance
inherent to lab-made products.
