Window Basics – Terms You Need to Know
Most windows are comprised of two parts, the pane, which is usually
made from some sort of glass, and the frame, which holds the pane,
and can be made from a variety of materials. Together these two
things are called a sash and can be used in a number of ways.
One thing to consider when approaching your window remodeling
project is heat resistance. The most common way to find this out
is to ask your Remodeling Consultant about R and U values. The
R-value is a measure of thermal resistance, while the U value,
reflects thermal conductivity. In other words, the higher the
R-value of your windows the lower the U value if you want to maximize
insulation and energy savings.
There are many more window terms – some you might know
and some might be completely unfamiliar – which you will
encounter as you plan and research your window remodeling project.
