Window Options to Suit Your Needs
& Personal Taste
Today’s modern window schematics come in many styles and
are fashioned from a number of materials. Globally, window design
choice is varied mostly because of the prevailing weather environment.
For example, stronger winds on the coast might dictate smaller
outward-opening windows while continental climates might rely
on larger windows that open inward to increase cross ventilation.
Once you have educated yourself and have decided what the scope
of your project will be, it’s time to look through the materials.

The most common windows on the market, the double-hung and single
hung windows are the easiest to replace. In fact, these windows
are probably the ones you remember in your childhood home. These
windows open vertically, allowing you to control the air ventilation.
You also have the choice of placing a screen on the interior or
exterior of the window frame and of adding storm windows for the
winter months. While these windows can be made from a variety
of materials, humidity can affect wood- framed options making
these somewhat difficult to open over time.
Single Hung Window Sashes:
Only the bottom sash slides upward.
Double Hung Window Sashes:
Both sashes slide vertically allowing more flexibility. In the
summer, these windows are useful in cooling without air conditioning.
By opening the top sash on one window and the bottom sash on another
across the room, the hot air leaves from the top opening, allowing
the cooler air to come in through the bottom.
