Remodeling Ideas for a Small Kitchen

September 5, 2012

You might think renovating a small kitchen would be a waste of time due to size limitations, but by taking advantage of the hundreds of affordable remodeling ideas to make small kitchens appear spacious as well as beautiful, your kitchen remodeling experience can be enjoyable and exciting while adding value to your home.

Suggestions for making creating the illusion of a larger kitchen include:

Install upper cabinets that do not have doors to create a more open, brighter appearance. Natural and/or artificial illumination flows easily around a kitchen that has open shelving or cabinetry.
If you do not like the look of doorless cabinets, you can get the same, open effect by installing glass cabinet doors instead of solid doors.
Place light fixtures above cabinets so that they are pointing more at the ceiling than the floor. This enhances the sense of height in the kitchen as well as the sense of visible space.
Get rid of any unnecessary clutter. Bare, clean countertops can instantly give a kitchen a more spacious appearance, especially with effective placement of light fixtures that provide corners with adequate illumination.
If you have a small kitchen, choose light colors for paint or wallpaper purposes. Although your kitchen does not need to be pure white, eggshell white or minimalist tan, make sure that any reds, greens or blues you select are delicate, pastel shades of that particular color.
When purchasing a new kitchen table, think about obtaining a table with armless chairs. In addition to taking up less room, these types of chairs are easier to clean and easier to move around in a small kitchen.
Think about installing a space-saving counter that provides room underneath to place several stools when not in use. Using counters as kitchen tables is a great way to find extra space in a small kitchen and also facilitates clean-up following meals.
Replace an old, oversized sink with a smaller, more modern sink that can give you more counter or appliance space.
Replace small kitchen tiles with larger ones to enhance the illusion of spaciousness in your newly renovated kitchen. Select solid, light colored tiles or tiles with delicate designs.
Just like the garage, a kitchen ceiling has yards of unused space in which you could hang pots, pans and large utensils to free up cabinet space for other items. These specially designed kitchen racks can be raised and lowered easily for quick access to cookware and are available in a variety of styles and materials.

For kitchens that are problematically small, borrowing space from an adjoining room may be a viable choice.
