Autumn is the perfect season to take care of the small items in your home so as to avoid a winter disaster.  Most of the preparation tips listed below you can go over yourself. But, if you choose to have a professional take care of it, it’s definitely worth the expense.

Windows & Doors

A common problem when preparing your home for winter is fixing air leaks around your windows and doors. In an effort to save on your heating costs this fall and winter, you should weather-strip your windows and doors by sealing openings. You’ll reduce drafts and keep your home a comfortable temperature. Plus, you’ll likely save money in the process.  It’s important to note that weather-stripping will deteriorate over time so check and replace it periodically.

With colder temperatures settling in, it’s the right time to switch out summer drapery for heavier fabrics.  Heavier fabrics with deeper colors will make your home feel warmer and will help keep drafts out.

Faucets

If you live in New York City, you know winters often bring freezing temperatures.  Ensure your faucets are in good working conditions to prevent them from freezing and possibly bursting.  Look for leaks and cracking seals. You should examine all your faucets from your kitchen, bathrooms and utility rooms to be sure everything is in good working order.

Smoke Detectors

Fall Cleanup

Take this new season to rid your home of old accumulations.  With the changing seasons throughout the year, you can rotate your wardrobe so that off season items don’t take up precious storage space.  Another idea is to pair down your dishes in your cupboard to a few of each item to create more space.

Autumn is the perfect time of year to add in earth tones into your décor. You can add these touches in your artwork, table centerpieces, wreaths, and accessories.  Fall artwork can change the mood in your home instantly to create a warm space. Consider nature themes with colors such as orange, rusts, and golds.  For an informal centerpiece for your dining room table, consider using red and yellow apples. You can also add fall colored throw blankets on your couches with complimenting throw pillows to give your living space a cozy autumn update.
