The funny part about laundry rooms is that we use them often, yet when we’re remodeling or renovating our homes, this space is an afterthought. What we forget is this is a functional space that we use frequently and therefore, it should warrant a little bit of extra attention and thought.

If a New York City apartment with its own washer and dryer makes your heart skip a beat, check out our top three tips on what to consider before you make it happen.

Tip #1: What Are You Hoping to Achieve?

Take some time to dig into a couple questions about what is most important to you because these responses will influence your decisions and budget to get you what you’re really after. Two important things to consider; are you just looking for more functionality or do you want to make your laundry space look nice too?

Tip #2: Do You Want the Space to Function?

With your small space, you may resent people with huge dreamy laundry rooms that have several machines and enough space for folding.  Worry not! It’s possible to fit a stylish and extremely functional laundry room into a small space. We know because we’ve made it happen time and time again.

Think about the other functions you want for your laundry room and make sure you create room for those things. If you have a lot of space to spare, you can create shelving, storage, or even make the space into a mudroom.

Many apartment dwellers who lack space may also design the laundry room to function in their kitchens, bathrooms or closets.

Tip #3: What Kind of Appliances Do You Want?

The selection of your machines or if you’re using existing machines, will affect other choices for your space. For example, do you have or want side-by-side or stacked machines? Stacked machines can save space if you have a narrow space to install them, such as a closet or a corner in your kitchen.

Do you want or have front-loading or top-loading machines? Front-load machines give you the option of adding a countertop for a folding and sorting area or they can be easily installed in a kitchen under a counter or in the kitchen island.

Top loading machines are the most economically friendly, depending on the shape and size of your space.  Their low price point makes them apartment owner’s favorite choice.
