How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets

December 12, 2012

Looking at the same kitchen cabinets day after day can make you feel bored and dissatisfied with your entire house. But if the idea of choosing new kitchen cabinets seems overwhelming, having some basic guidelines from which to follow can help alleviate the indecision involved in the process.

For example, you can start planning to replace your old cabinets with bright and attractive new ones by taking a realistic look at your budget. Determining your budget ahead of time and sticking to that budget by selecting cabinets within your financial means prevents you from spending more than you should. Some people take a budget amount and divide it in half to allow for additional expenses in the event they occur. You might even decide to upgrade another area of your kitchen once you see how nice the new cabinets look. Having a little extra will help you complete the kitchen of your dreams.

Kitchen cabinet construction consists of three types: custom-made, semi-custom, and stock. Stock cabinets are pre-constructed and purchasable immediately from the remodeling company’s inventory of items. Alternately, semi-custom kitchen cabinets, or “made to order” cabinets are built after you have ordered them. Deciding to order semi-custom cabinets means you have more variety from which to choose since you are essentially designing your own cabinets from options provided by the contractor.

The best (but also most expensive) kitchen cabinetry is custom-made. These are individually hand-crafted by a wood shop or custom cabinetry maker who constructs the cabinets according to your exact specifications.

If you are not sure what kind of kitchen cabinets you want, looking through catalogs or home decorating magazines can provide you with some useful ideas. When choosing kitchen cabinets, remember that you want them to blend well with the shape and style of your kitchen. Larger kitchens can accommodate more elaborately carved cabinets while smaller, cozier kitchens appear attractive with lighter-colored, less dramatic cabinets.

Door designs are an important factor to consider as well. Do you want a slab-type door, which consists of one door that conceals the whole cabinet front? Or perhaps you would prefer two separate cabinet doors that open outward to reveal the inside of the cabinet? Other kitchen cabinet door styles include glass doors framed with wood, beveled “retro” cabinet doors, or even kitchen cabinets without doors.

Materials commonly used to make kitchen cabinets are wood, laminate, or metal. Wood kitchen cabinets can be stained, unstained, or painted in any color you wish. Moreover, stains involve a wide variety of brown shades from which to choose so you don’t have to worry about matching the rest of your kitchen’s wood furniture. Sleek and easy to clean, stainless steel metal cabinets enhance any kitchen with a contemporary, seamless look and are resistant to warping from heat and humidity, a problem that sometimes affects wood cabinets.
