Tips for Designing a Beautiful Bathroom

With New York City apartment bathrooms, redesigning advice tends to concern ways in which you can create a beautiful and comfortable bathroom while utilizing a small space that cannot be substantially modified. This is where self-expression and expert design principles are important components to consider when decorating your bathroom, as well as symmetrical and asymmetrical balance, and the color scheme of your bathroom rugs, fixtures, and curtains.

Whispers or Explosions of Color

Painters express themselves by choosing colors with which to paint an image. You will be expressing your inner nature through the colors you choose with which to redesign your bathroom. Be aware, however, that cool, lighter hues such as blue or violet, reflect light and will result in making a small space appear airier and more spacious. Darker colors, on the other hand, absorb light which makes an area seem smaller and more compact. A color scheme composed of contrasting hues tends to divide a whole space into smaller spaces, which may be more applicable for larger bathrooms.

Illuminating Your Dream Bathroom

In addition to aesthetic qualities, lighting in your bathroom should contribute to your safety as well. While frosty illumination may give a dreamy, ethereal element to a bathroom, you want to be able to see exactly what you are doing when shaving, plucking eyebrows, or applying makeup. You could achieve both effects, however, by installing theatrical mirror lighting, which will give you appropriate lighting when you need it and quieter illumination when you don’t. In addition, if you simply cannot change the lighting in your apartment bathroom, designing with lighter colors in mind will maximize what lighting is available.

Balancing Acts in a Bathroom Makeover

Creating a sense of aesthetic balance either symmetrically or asymmetrically when redesigning your apartment bathroom is easily achieved by placing objects at certain points or in conjunction with empty spaces (called “voids” in architecture speak). While symmetry is based on repetition, the dynamics of asymmetry are created when you refrain from repetition. However, the problem with asymmetry is overdoing it to the point where the effect resembles the disturbing, disconnected images in a funhouse. If you are not sure of the balancing act you have created in your bathroom, look at images of Asian design styles which represent the asymmetrical design.

Playing With Patterns and Textures

Adding texture and pattern to an apartment bathroom does not require a physical renovation, although you might think it does because surfaces in a bathroom are water-resistant and easily cleaned. Simple ways to enhance a bathroom with patterns and textures are by hanging big, fluffy towels on hooks or rungs and securing thick rugs to the floor with carpet tape. The design of a shower curtain is also vital to the overall pattern effect you wish to achieve in redecorating your bathroom. Light-colored shower curtains or those displaying diagonal or vertical lines can make a bathroom appear wider, taller, or more spacious when combined with towels and rugs that complement their impression.

Corralling the Clutter

Easily included in any budget when redesigning a bathroom is redecorating by de-cluttering. In addition to simply throwing away items that have expired, such as medications, you can also get creative by utilizing wall space in your bathroom. Small, lightweight shelves can be hung near the shower for placing shampoos and conditioners. A decorative wine rack is great to use for towel storage if your linen closet is already full. In addition, pouring shampoos or body lotions into decanters that are color-coordinated with your newly redesigned bathroom will eliminate a lot of “visual” clutter that tends to make a bathroom appear messier than it really is.
