39 West 83rd Street Kitchen Renovation

Before the Renovation

Located in a prewar Upper West Side co-op, the original kitchen was enclosed, compact, and limited by outdated cabinetry, dark countertops, and insufficient storage. A partial wall separated the kitchen from the adjoining living space, making the room feel smaller than its actual footprint. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt more open and functional while preserving the apartment’s character, including the exposed brick wall that brings warmth and history to the space. The renovation focused on improving storage, updating finishes, and creating a better connection between the kitchen and living area.

Final Project Reveal

The completed kitchen feels significantly more open and inviting while maintaining the charm of the original apartment. Custom cabinetry extends to the ceiling to maximize storage, while the removal of part of the dividing wall allowed for the addition of a compact island that improves both workflow and seating. Soft sage-green cabinetry, warm brass accents, and a handcrafted checkerboard tile backsplash create a distinctive design that feels both timeless and personal. The preserved exposed brick wall provides texture and contrast, giving the kitchen a character uniquely suited to Upper West Side living.

Every design decision was made to maximize functionality within the kitchen’s compact footprint. Strategic layout improvements, custom storage solutions, and carefully selected finishes helped transform the space while respecting the character of the prewar apartment.

Custom Cabinetry & Layout Improvements

One of the most impactful changes was the reconfiguration of the kitchen layout. A portion of the non-structural wall was removed, opening the space to the adjacent room and allowing for the addition of a small island. New custom cabinetry in a soft sage finish extends to the ceiling, creating significantly more storage than the original kitchen. Integrated panel-ready appliances further contribute to the clean, built-in appearance, while the new layout improves circulation and functionality throughout the room.

Countertops, Tile & Finishing Details

The material palette balances warmth and durability. Frosty Carrina Caesarstone countertops were paired with a Blanco farmhouse sink and an unlacquered brass bridge faucet selected by the homeowners. The backsplash features handmade 4×4 tiles arranged in a custom checkerboard pattern using soft white and beige tones, adding texture and visual interest. New AKDO Gaja Sand floor tiles, brass hardware, under-cabinet lighting, and updated appliances complete the renovation, creating a kitchen that feels tailored to both the apartment and its owners.
