Color Outside the Lines

By Tiffany Smolick

If you’ve ever found yourself sitting at home and feeling like you just want to do something to this drab place but don’t have time or money to do so, you’re not alone. Tons of people everywhere, every day, are thinking the same as you.

Sometimes friends, paint, creativity – and a weekend – is all that is needed to reinvigorate a space.

Painting is a great way to dramatically change a space and make it feel brand new again without the time and financial commitment of a full-blown remodeling project.

But, instead of playing it safe and just painting walls some neutral color, why not dare to be different, go outside your design comfort zone and try out something BOLD.

There are many other places to put that color. Here are a few ideas.

The Staircase

It facilitates your movement to other rooms in the house. Why not reward it with a beautifully, unique paint job. Guests will think you are the coolest person they know.

The Ceiling

We always forget about the “wall” above us. Your ceiling is tired of being neglected. It wants to be as pretty as its four wall counterparts. Painting your ceiling will tell others that you’re not ordinary … you’re a design force to be reckoned with.

The Door

Who hasn’t passed by a candy colored door and thought to themselves: “Wow!” Painting your door not only sends a strong, positive design message to passersby, it inspires them to be different and creative in their own lives. If setting this kind of design precedent isn’t encouraging enough, I don’t know what is.

The Floor

Ever hear of the saying “hiding in plain sight”? It refers to something or someone so familiar, you don’t pay it any attention – yet it’s right there in your presence. Well, floors are a great example of an area worthy of great design “hiding in plain sight“. As you can see here for the painted kitchen below:
