As soon as school is out and we see that sun up in the sky, we know that summer is upon us! You might be ready for the sun, but is your home ready for the warmer weather?

Just getting our summer clothes from the closet isn’t enough to be summer ready.  Your home needs to get ready for summer too and this may take some time and effort. Don’t worry, we’ve put together some tips to help you get started.

Tip #1: Embrace your living space.

If you’re lucky enough to have some outdoor space such as a garden, patio, or balcony, it’s time to start using it. A balcony is an amazing example of how you can take advantage of summer’s fresh air without needing much outdoor space. A patio chair accented with a colorful outdoor rug or weatherproof pillow alters a simple space into a charming retreat.

Tip #2: Bring in some plant life.

Even if your apartment doesn’t have outdoor space, a summer garden in a window box, is an easy and beautiful way to incorporate plants into your home. A  boxed garden is an ideal way to benefit from the beautiful flowers and herbs that blossom in the summer. Choose a large pot to create a group of smaller pots for a landscaped effect using multiple plants.

If you’re short on space, a few hanging plants can add an excellent pop of green to any room. Just be sure to place them where they can drain without making a mess and can also get plenty of sunshine.

Tip #3: Add color.

Summer style is known as being cheerful, bright, and bold. It’s the perfect time to use bold colors and patterns you can’t get away with during other seasons.

Pillows, cushions, and colorful accessories are a fun and easy way to brighten up an otherwise simple style. When it comes to textiles, don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns, contrasting colors and styles.  Have fun with it and play around with your décor!

To add an extra pop of summer cheer, try to incorporate color in unexpected areas in your home. Kitchens can often become pristine, all-white spaces. Mix it up a bit with a few colorful dishes, dish cloths or aprons.

Summer is an opportunity for you to think out of the box and be bold. Try new prints and patterns that would otherwise not complement your décor as nicely as they do in the summer.

Tip #4: Use light and breezy textiles.

You can give your home a bright feel and also cool it down on hot days by mixing light and airy fabrics into your summer design.

If the style of your home is jam-packed of plush textiles and dark colors, it may be a good idea to give it a more summery feel with a few quick changes such as with tablecloths, rugs, placemats, pillow cushions, and sofa covers as they can all be temporarily replaced in warmer months. Choose an unexpected color rather than the more traditional brown, black, and white, and it becomes a perfect way to bring summer into your home.

Replace heavy winter drapes with sheer or thin curtains to let more light in. Use the same ideas when approaching summer bed linens and throw pillows. When it’s 100 degrees outside, lounging or sleeping on a fleece or velvet cushion probably doesn’t sound like a good idea!
